Zwarte Piet: Achter de Schmink / Black Pete: Behind the Make Up

Every year during the Christmas period, the people of the Netherlands celebrate Sinterklaas; a long-standing Dutch tradition that has been documented since 1360. An important part of the festivities is Sinterklaas’ helper Zwarte Piet (Black Pete). In 2014, a Dutch court ruled that the figure of Black Pete is in fact, a racial stereotype and should be considered as discriminatory, despite his long standing tradition.
